The Director Statutory Accounting leads a team of accounting professionals to ensure the timely and accurate accounting and reporting of the company’s General Account, including reinsurance. This leader manages the preparation, analysis, and review of financial statements in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and statutory accounting principles (“SAP”) from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (“NAIC”).  The Director Statutory Accounting is responsible for providing analysis and insight critical to our capital management.  This leader also assists with external review and audit coordination and ICOFR compliance efforts.

What you will do:

  • Leads a team of accounting professionals responsible for the maintenance of the general ledger including journal entries, account reconciliations, reinsurance and key aspects of the month end close.  Responsible for the Company accounting, consolidations, and statutory blue books.
  • Leads the team’s design and review of US Statutory quarterly and annual filings to state regulatory agencies. Ensures filings are accurate and timely in accordance with SAP principles.
  • Performs and/or reviews complex accounting research and analysis.
  • Conducts attribution analyses for capital management to assess the risk-based capital (RBC) rate impact based on accounting results.  Presents those findings and insights as part of broader earnings.
  • Supports the preparation of risk-based capital forecasts and Total Adjusted Capital
  • Effectively partners across the organization, including financial reporting, accounting, tax, treasury, risk, and investment operations, to support consolidated accounting and reporting and quarterly reviews of results.
  • Leads the coordination of audit and review processes for the team. Works closely with internal and external auditors to ensure the timely completion of reviews.
  • Manages the design and implementation of ICOFR controls pertaining to accounting and financial reporting processes under the guidance of the Internal Audit team.
  • Maintains an effective control environment through the mitigation and remediation of ICOFR compliance issues.
  • Leads the team’s implementation of technical accounting policies and procedures under the guidance of the Technical Accounting Department.
  • Stays abreast of all financial reporting and compliance regulatory changes that may impact the business.
  • Manages the team’s resource allocation for accounting, reporting and control processes.
  • Drives the team to continually improve their processes and embraces automation initiatives across the finance department.
  • Leads team of individual contributors, including establishing and monitoring goals, reviewing work completed by team on a timely basis, and ensuring proper communication of accounting and corporate policies, practices, and performance.

What you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting/Finance or equivalent work experience
  • Ten (10) years of accounting experience in progressive roles with at least six (6) years' experience leading or managing teams
  • Minimum six (6) years STAT accounting and financial reporting experience
  • Excellent working knowledge of IFRS and US Statutory accounting for Life & Health Insurance Companies and/or financial services organizations.

  • Active CPA license preferred
  • Solid understanding of reinsurance accounting
  • Solid understanding of Risk Based Capital and Capital Management
  • Solid understanding of IFRS and GAAP and financial reporting concepts
  • Understanding of acquisition and disposition accounting
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated competency in executing strategic plans.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to independently manage department workload and proactively identify projects as necessary.

Base Salary Range

$109,600.00 - $158,950.00

The salary range above shows the typical minimum to maximum base salary range for this position in the location listed. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation offered may vary from posted hiring range based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.
