Summer 2026 Intern – Software Engineer; Technology Modernization
Location: Greenwood Village, CO (on-site & in-person)
Duration: 10 weeks from May 27, 2026 to July 31, 2026
Schedule: Full-Time (40 hours/week)
Compensation: $24.00 - $25.00 per hour (based on academic level)

Program Overview
Empower’s Summer Internship Program offers an immersive 10-week experience designed to develop rising professionals with an interest in financial services. Our interns thrive in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment while gaining valuable insights into our business, culture, and mission.
Each intern is paired with a dedicated manager, mentor, and executive sponsor, and will work on a meaningful summer project. This program includes:
- Hands-on experience with real business initiatives
- Exposure to senior leadership and cross-functional teams
- Networking opportunities
- Professional and personal development workshops
At the conclusion of the internship, each intern presents their work to business leaders, showcasing the impact they’ve made.
What you’ll do
As a Software Engineer Intern, you will:
- Take ownership of a defined engineering project or feature aligned to a larger, multi-year Technology Modernization initiative, delivering functionality that provides real business value.
- Contribute to the modernization of legacy applications through full-stack development activities, including analysis, design, development, testing, and deployment.
- Build and enhance backend and frontend components using technologies such as Java, Python, SpringBoot, and SQL.
- Support ongoing engineering needs by working on small enhancements, bug fixes, or improvements that may be independent of the primary project but meaningful to the team.
- Collaborate with an Agile development team through stand-ups, sprint activities, and code reviews while learning modern engineering practices and tools.
Over the course of the 10-week internship, you will deliver meaningful, value-driven results through a combination of a defined engineering project and supporting enhancements. You will receive continuous support, guidance, and feedback from your manager and team.
What you bring
We’re seeking college students who demonstrate a balance of technical aptitude, professionalism, and curiosity. Ideal candidates will bring the following:
Required Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in a college or university (Bachelor’s or Master’s program)
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
- Available for full 10-week program (May 27 – July 31, 2026)
- Must reside near or be able to reliably commute to Greenwood Village, CO (in-person internship)
- Hands-on experience with software development tools through coursework or projects, especially using:
- Java
- SQL
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Authorization to work in the U.S. without current or future visa sponsorship (CPT/OPT not supported)

What will set you apart
- At least 2 years of academic progress toward a bachelor’s degree
- Expected to graduate and be available for full-time employment by mid-2027
- Experience with Python and SpringBoot preferred
- Strong Java programming skills preferred
- Preferred majors: Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, Data Analytics, or other relevant technical fields

Base Salary Range
$43,600.00 - $60,025.00The salary range above shows the typical minimum to maximum base salary range for this position in the location listed. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation offered may vary from posted hiring range based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.
